Security is the freedom from fear, doubt, anxiety, or danger.

Home security means doing everything you can to protect your family, your home, and your possessions from a burglary or home invasion.

  • 1 IN 5 homes experience a break-in or home invasion every year.

  • Nearly 2/3 of all burglaries happen during the day - when you're not even home!

When we hear about a burglary, we only hear about "the value of property stolen".  We never hear about the emotional
scars left by the burglars. We often hear of someone else who had burglars break into their home. They lived in a nice neighbourhood, so they felt safe.  Home security was always one of those "someday" things.  "I felt violated down to the bone." "I always believed things like that only happened to other people” is often heard. It is rare that you will ever recover your property. Nearly 90% of victims don't!

So get serious. Install a home security system. Once you've been hit, burglars see your home as an easy target.

  • Most burglaries are through a back door or window or 1st floor window.

  • Nearly 2 out of 3 of them involve forced entry. Most of the others are through open doors or windows.

  • The average burglar is in your home for only a few minutes. They just have time to look in the "usual" places.

  • We currently offer more than 20 different Burglar Alarm and CCTV systems. From basic wireless and cabled alarms for the home to multi-site systems for commercial properties.

You're here to look for ways to protect your family, your home, and your possessions. Pat yourself on the back for being pro-active. Summer time brings out burglars! Now is the time to be extra careful. The economy has caused some people to do desperate things.

Reduce the risk of your home or business premises being burgled by making sure you’ve taken these simple (and often inexpensive) precautions.  Most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves. In two out of 10 burglaries, they don’t even have to use force - they get in through an open door or window. So fit strong locks to your doors and windows and make sure you always keep them fully locked. If you are replacing or fitting new doors and windows, get ones that are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS 24-1 (doors). Look at your home and business through a burglar’s eyes.

  • How would you get in if you’d forgotten your keys? If you can get in, so can a burglar.
  • Are there places where they could break in without being seen?
  • Would they have to make a lot of noise by breaking glass?

Protecting your business from robbery (Metropolitan Police)

Be alert!

All members of staff should maintain vigilance at all times, anything unusual, e.g. people loitering outside, should be noted and reported to management or the police. Keep windows clear to allow good vision.

Put up a sign asking motor cyclists to remove helmets before entering premises. Be suspicious of those not complying. Put a height marker near the door to help description taking.

Vision and Lighting

Maintain a high level of lighting inside and outside the premises. Be careful when putting up displays and signs, ensuring good vision inside premises and through windows.

Acknowledgement

Visitors or customers should be made aware that a member of staff has seen them enter. In other words eye contact should be made.

Dangers of habit

Company premises holding large sums of money are most vulnerable when staff levels are low e.g. during lunch hours or when opening or closing the business. Staff working alone need extra security arrangements. While it is accepted that procedures within any organisation are necessary, predictable routines should always be avoided; e.g. vary cash delivery/collection times and routes to and from your bank or business. If it is necessary to hold large sums of cash, consider professional cash handling services.

Reduce the risk

Reduce the quantity of cash held in tills by using deposit safes with time controls.

Security checklist:

Here’s a quick reminder of some of the things you can do to improve the security around your home.

  • If replacing or fitting new doors and windows, get ones certified to BS7950 (windows)
  • or PAS  24-1 (doors).
  • Fit mortise locks (Kitemarked BS3621) to front and back doors and locks to downstairs windows or
  • windows within reach.
  • Keep your house and car keys safe and away from doors and windows.
  • Fit a professional burglar alarm, but make sure it is installed properly and works.
  • Fit a CCTV camera to the front and rear of your property, some systems give you the ability to look-in via the
  • internet so if your burglar alarm activates you can look at the CCTV at your property from any laptop or PC.
  • Fit an audio or video intercom system so that you can check who is at the door before you open it.
  • Keep your garage and garden shed locked with proper security locks, and keep any tools secure and out of sight.
  • Trim back any plants or hedges that a burglar could hide behind.
  • Make sure you have up-to-date insurance.
  • Consider shutters grilles and security blinds in vulnerable areas.

When you are away:

  • Don't leave your curtains closed during the daytime.
  • Use timer switches or X-10 devices to turn on some lights when it gets dark
  • X-10 switches connected to a wireless intruder alarm enable you to switch
  •  on lights when you are away from home
  • Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries when you go away.
  • Ask a neighbour to look after your home.
  • Many burglars will avoid breaking into a property with an alarm.

Burglar alarms (From the Home Office Crime  Reduction website)

There are many alarm systems on the market. These range from fairly cheap alarms, which you can fit yourself, to more sophisticated systems, usually only costing hundreds of pounds for a basic system which need to be installed by professionals. Very low-cost DIY alarms are less reliable and can, through false alarms, be a nuisance to both you and your neighbours. Consider whether you need an audible-only alarm (which sets off a siren or bell) or a monitored alarm (connected to a central 'listening' service) or a system which can call you directly on activation. Due to the huge number of false alarms, police will only respond to audible alarms if there is confirmation of suspicious activity - such as a neighbour saying they saw someone or heard glass being broken. For monitored systems, the monitoring company will check whether any alarm was false - for example, set off by the homeowners entering the wrong access code - and call out the police if necessary. Monitored systems are particularly important for isolated properties.
